Tractor Trailer Into A House W/Entrapment & Fire
June 22, 2009- At 0815 hrs., Box 152-01 was sounded for a tractor trailer into a house with entrapment and fire, in the house, at 976 Ritner Hwy, in the area of Conestoga Drive.  E15-1 and the Rescue Squad responded on the box.  First arriving units reported a tractor trailer and a pick-up truck involved, both into a house, with wires down in the area.  Upon investigation, crews found the driver of the tractor trailer was heavily entrapped and fire from the engine compartment was extending into the house.  Command 52 was established and the technical rescue team from Cumberland County was requested due to the heavy damage to the home.  After shoring up the house, crews immediately began to extricate the pinned driver while additional crews quickly knocked down the extending fire inside.  Co. 15's crew concentrated its efforts on initially shoring up the house and then extricating the pinned driver.  Once this was done, crews assisted with overhaul on the 1st and 2nd floors.  In addition to the trapped driver, several occupants were also safely removed from the home.  They were home at the time and awoke to quit the chaotic event playing out inside their home.  E15-1 and the Rescue Squad returned to service.

A Thank You From The Holtry Family!
June 14, 2009-  On Sunday, Randy Holtry and his family held a pizza party for the members of WEFR, as a way of saying "Thank You" for saving his life.  Mr. Holtry was severely injured back on June 8th of 2008 when he became trapped in a front-end loader, while working at his house on Possum Hollow Road.  WEFR members extricated him from that loader and he was air-lifted to a trauma center.  A year later, Mr. Holtry is recovering well and wanted to show his appreciation to his rescuers.  WEFR President Larry Kline and the membership presented Mr. Holtry with a honorary membership at the ceremony.

In this profession, these are the moments we all live for.  We never expect a thank you from those we save, but, it is a cherished moment when that does happen.  For a fireman, saving lives is part of the job!  A "thank you" is a bonus in this profession, always remember that.

2009 Child's Dream Weekend
June 6 & 7th, 2009- On Saturday and Sunday, West End Fire And Rescue Co. held the 12th annual Child's Dream Weekend.  Once again, the weekend was a huge success.  The kids spent the weekend at the firehouse and got a taste of what it is like to be a firefighter through the different drills conducted by our members.  They also enjoyed an evening of mini-golf at the Links of Olde Scotland and a movie back at the firehouse.  We hope all of the kids enjoyed their experiences during the weekend and had the chance to learn a little something about firefighting.  Thank you to all who attended and to everyone who helped make the weekend happen!
