Members Participate in 2009 Jr. Fire Academy
August 1, 2009- West End Fire and Rescue Company would like to congratulate its two members along with all the young men and women who completed the week long Junior Fire Academy held at Franklin County Training Center.  A Job Well Done!

Tractor Trailer Fire at Travel Plaza
August 2, 2009- At  2236 hrs., Engine company 15 was dispatched to assist Co. 52 with a tractor trailer on fire at the Shippensburg Travel Plaza at Exit 29 on Interstate 81.  First arriving units found fire in the front of the trailer portion with the tractor still attached.  E15-1's crew assisted with opening up the side of the trailer and extinguishing of the fire.  Engine 15-1 returned to service at 2353 hours.

MVA On Olde Scotland Rd
August 11, 2009- At  1314 hrs.,  Company 15 along with EMS were dispatched to the 7800 block of Olde Scotland Rd for a reported auto accident.  Engine 15-1 and the Rescue Squad responded on the run.  Rescue Squad 15 arrived to find a two vehicle accident with the roadway partially blocked.  Upon investigation, crews found minor injuries with no entrapment. Crews assisted EMS with the injured victims and checked for hazards on both vehicles.  Company 15 returned to service at 1328 hours.

7th Annual Keith Hess Memorial Golf Tournament
August 15, 2009- The 7th Annual Keith Hess Memorial Golf Tournament was held at Eagles Crossing Golf Club.  The day started out with a little fog but, gave way to a beautiful sunny day with temperatures hovering around 90 degrees.  In all, 32 teams participated in this years' tournament.  This year we broke it up into 3 flights and awarded prizes to the top three teams in each flight. 

Top three teams of the tournament were:  3rd Place went to Hagerstown Fire Department team consisting of Steve Mitchell, Dan Myers, Todd Grimes, and Brian Henry; 2nd Place went to Jeff Smith, Diane Smith, Ron Andrechick, and Denny Ford; and 1st Place went to Jack Breighner, Josh Deardorff, Matt Deardorff, and Gerald Pensinger.  A big THANK YOU goes out to the Hagerstown Fire Department team and Shawn Corwell, winner of the 50/50 drawing, for donating back their winnings to the tournament.

THANK YOU to Fogelsanger-Bricker Funeral Home for sponsoring our event this year.  We would also like to THANK all of our hole sponsors and contributors for making this event possible.  THANK YOU to all of those who came out to play.  Everyone of you keep this tournament going each year.  Finally, THANK YOU to everyone who came out to help on Saturday.  This event means a lot to the Hess family and we couldn't do it without your help.  .

Smoke Showing from a Double Wide
August 17, 2009-  Engine company 15 and the Rescue Squad was dispatched 1st due on the box for reported smoke coming from the house at number 94 Mt. Rock Rd in Southampton township.  Sgt. 11 arrived and reported smoking showing from side B of a 1 story double wide modular home.  Engine 15-1 arrived, stretched a 1 3/4" attack line and found fire in the attic area of the home in quadrants A & B.  Command 15 was established.  The truck crew from Co. 53 arrived and quickly went to work opening up the roof above the fire.  The fire was quickly knocked down and confined to an area above a light fixture in the ceiling, what is believed to have started the fire.  There was some extension to the exterior wall and eave area on Side B.  Crews quickly opened up the interior ceiling and exterior soffit to expose all extending fire.  Command 15 began to return some units a short time later.  Company 15 later returned to service after all overhaul and investigation was complete.

Rescue Squad to Chambersburg for RIT
August 21, 2009- At 1000 hrs.,  Rescue Squad 15 was dispatched to 126 S. Third St in the borough of Chambersburg as part of the RIT assignment for the house fire.  Company 1 units arrived on the scene and reported heavy smoke showing from the roof of a 2-story duplex, ordinary construction.  The Rescue Squad responded with 7 personnel.  The crew arrived and assumed its duties by checking all sides of the dwelling for ladders and ventilation, along with any apparent hazards.  The Squad crew was later sent to the 2nd floor and attic area of the fire building to assist with overhaul.  Rescue Squad 15 returned to service just before noon.

WEFR Helps Out at Vacation Bible School
August 23, 2009- WEFR members helped out the Cleversburg U.M.'s vacation bible school.  Thanks to all members who helped to make these kids night.  The following is a Thank You from the Cleversburg U.M. Church along with a link to a pictures they put together as a thank you.

Thanks so much to West End Fire company for joining us at Cleversburg U.M. Church.  What a wonderful thing to do.  We greatly appreciated it and the kids were pretty excited with the whole experience.  All the volunteers were terrific!!!

One Confined on Orrstown Rd
August 24, 2009- Company 15 along with EMS were dispatched to the 1200 block of Orrstown Rd for an auto accident.  Engine 15-1 and the Rescue Squad responded on the run and arrived on the scene to find two vehicles off the roadway with one confined.  The Squad crew quickly stabilized the vehicles and popped the passenger's door on the car to remove the confined patient.  EMS then took over care and transported the patient to an area hospital.  Company 15 returned to service a short time later.

Shippensburg University Activities Fair
August 30, 2009- On Saturday, the West End Fire and Rescue Co., Vigilant Hose Co., and Shippensburg Area EMS participated in the annual Activities Fair at Shippensburg University.  Thanks to all who helped out this day!
